Copyright protection begins when the ideas become fixed in a tangible medium. Copyright registration is not a requirement for protection.

So why should you register your copyright? Registration creates a public record of the copyright. Owners of registered copyrights are entitled to statutory damages and attorney’s fees in successful litigation. If registration occurs within five years of publication, it is considered prima facie evidence in a court of law.

Registering a copyright is a very simple process. It usually takes one to two years.
